I really have to go to bed, so I’ll make this quick.
Now I’m not sure how the big box chain will really fair against local competitors, however (taking aim at the union/Pathmark employee in the NYTimes article) from seeing how Walmart stations their stores in Long Island, they will most likely not make this store a “Superstore”. What this means is that it won’t contain a full-fledged supermarket - Want an example? go to New Jersey. Secondly, if you go out to East Meadow in L.I., you’ll see a Stop and Shop right next door with a really good amount of people going in. What I think the employee should take into account is that her employer, Pathmark, is doing the same thing to the smaller grocery stores around the area - essentially it is a chain that provides reasonably cheaper goods than the local businesses.
If you are like me, you will realize that Wal-Mart isn’t as cheap as you think - many of their products are mere pennies from what other stores charge. And while each penny counts, I personally don’t think (or at least not too confident) that it will make a considerable difference. If you are really against Wal-Mart, then don’t shop there - and since a lot of people don’t want it there, then the locals won’t shop there and new consumers to the area will. Its as simple as that.
Being straightforward, this will attract new customers to the area, and if the locals are really loyal to their neighbors, they will shop locally as well. I say they put one in the city.
